Strategic Genesis (1981–1991)
The conceptual origins of the Petronas Twin Towers are inseparable from Malaysia's Vision 2020 programme, articulated by Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad in February 1991. However, the groundwork began a decade earlier when the Malaysian government identified the former Selangor Turf Club site as a prime candidate for urban redevelopment. The 100-acre parcel, located at the geographic centre of Kuala Lumpur, presented an unprecedented opportunity to create a world-class mixed-use district that would project Malaysia's economic ambitions on the global stage.
In 1991, an international design competition attracted entries from some of the world's most distinguished architectural practices. C\u00e9sar Pelli & Associates of New Haven, Connecticut, won the commission with a proposal that married Islamic geometric principles — particularly the eight-pointed star (Rub el Hizb) — with postmodern structural innovation. The design was not merely aesthetic: it encoded Malaysia's cultural identity into every floor plate, with the twin-tower configuration symbolising the nation's aspirations for duality — tradition and progress, East and West.
