Dr. Mahathir bin Mohamad

Political Patron & Visionary

As Malaysia's fourth Prime Minister (1981–2003), Dr. Mahathir championed the KLCC development as the physical embodiment of Vision 2020. His insistence on world-record height and Islamic design motifs directly shaped the towers' final form, and his political authority ensured the project received the sovereign-level commitment necessary to navigate the 1997 Asian financial crisis without delay or compromise.

César Pelli, FAIA

Lead Architect & Design Principal

Argentine-American architect César Pelli (1926–2019) designed the towers while serving as dean of Yale's School of Architecture. His vision fused Islamic geometric patterning — the eight-pointed star floor plan — with American postmodernism, creating a building that was both culturally specific and globally legible. Pelli regarded the commission as the defining work of his six-decade career.

Thornton Tomasetti (formerly Thornton-Tomasetti Engineers)

Structural Engineering Consultancy

The New York-based engineering firm developed the towers' innovative tube-in-tube structural system, combining reinforced-concrete cores with steel outriggers. Their design achieved a critical balance between the rigidity required for a 451.9-metre structure and the flexibility needed to accommodate differential settlement between the twin foundations — a tolerance of just 25 millimetres over the full height.

Akmad Tajuddin Ali

KLCC Holdings Managing Director

As the executive responsible for the KLCC development programme, Tajuddin Ali oversaw the coordination of over 10,000 construction workers, 1,500 professional consultants, and a procurement chain spanning 23 countries. His management of the dual-contractor construction model — with Japanese and Korean consortia building the towers simultaneously — is studied in project management curricula worldwide.

Dexter K. L. Wong

Chief Structural Engineer (Tower 2)

Leading the Samsung C&T engineering team, Wong was instrumental in resolving the critical column tilt discovered during Tower 2's construction. His team devised the GPS-guided correction protocol that adjusted the structure by 25 millimetres per floor over seven storeys — a feat of precision engineering performed while 3,000 workers continued operations above and below the correction zone.

Dr. Charles Thornton, PE

Founding Partner, Thornton Tomasetti

Thornton personally supervised the foundation design, which required boring 104 friction piles to depths of up to 115 metres through the challenging Kenny Hill geological formation. His decision to use a high-strength concrete mix (Grade 80) for the core walls — the highest grade used in any Malaysian structure at the time — enabled the towers' slender profile while maintaining a safety factor of 2.5.
